PLASMA FACILITY

FOR PRODUCING A BASALT WOOL (MINERAL WOOL)

Plasma technology for mineral (basalt) wool production is based on a plasmatron application for generating high temperature gas stream. In a special device the stream of hot air from a plasmatron initially melts a mineral charge and then the melt and the gas outflow together from the device through an orifice. In this case an intensive air blow of the liquid jet occurs, that leads to formation of large amount of the fine (less than 1mkm in diameter) and relatively long (up to several tens of cm) mineral fibers (wool).

Advantages of plasma technology for mineral wool production:

  • Plasmatron provides much more higher gas temperature compared to gas or oil burners. This allows to provide more efficient blowing and dispersing the melt, consequently to produce fine fibers (less than 1mkm for basalt).
  • Plasmatron allows to change gas temperature in the wide range and, by this way, to provide the optimal conditions for the wool production.
  • The proposed technology allows to decrease considerably a specific power (kW-h/kg) for wool production compared to existing technologies.
  • The plasmatron "Zvezda" used in this technology is powered directly from the industrial three-phase network without application of a rectifier or another converter, this enhances its reliability and exploitation convenience. The plasmatron resource up to the electrodes replacement is in excess of 500h, a replacement time is less than 10min.
  • A time for the working process initiation, from start to steady-state operation, is less than 20min, this allows, if it is necessary, to provide the facility operation only in the night time, when a cost of 1kW-h is lower.
